Born To Freak, by Sarah Seidelmann (Paperback)

Born to FREAK: A Salty Primer for Irrepressible Humans [Kindle Edition] Sarah Bamford Seidelmann MD (Author)

With the help of Alice the Elephant, I came to the realization somewhat late in life that I was born to FREAK. – Sarah Seidelmann

It is my dream that by confessing my own strangeness and sharing tales of epic FREAKY awesomeness, other irrepressible humans might get the memo earlier in their lives that they, too, were born to FREAK.

Through my personal work and my work with clients and groups, I’ve made so many connections between ADD, high sensitivity, Asperger’s syndrome, autism, addicts of every kind (sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling, shopping), depressed/anxious/manic people, intense people, change agents, black sheep, adrenaline junkies, irrepressibles, rebels, bohemians, life pirates, bad asses, artists, innovators, performers, comedians, and healers … and I believe we were all born to FREAK.

“Not everyone can handle your awesomeness. That’s okay. Toss them a loving ‘Namaste,’ with peace, love, and joy, and move on. Take your effervescence elsewhere.” Alice the Elephant.

We were all put here not to fit in, but to see things differently, to ruffle feathers, and to return balance to the world and our communities by using our creative abilities, our healing presence, and our eccentric gifts. I wrote this book to help you discover your own wondrous inner multitudes, so you’ll share your fantastic, strange, and entirely original notions with the world. We need you.

Was this written especially for me? Permission to revel in self.

So I got it in the post and read the back and cried out loud. Like an animal. Was it written for me? Then within the introduction I thought maybe Sarah S had a hidden camera in my house. For I too have sat down to do something then found myself surrounded by at least three different notebooks, then thought about Tina Fey, Making salsa from scratch and about a million other different things. I'm too much. I'm intense (just last week someone said "Sarah's so intense" but instead of apologising and thinking about it for days I simply said 'I come as I am' with a smile and come love. For both of us. And I was only one chapter in. I'm so happy to have read this book - it's like a permission slip from the Universe to just be myself. Even if you are just an ordinary human who has to tolerate my folk, this is brilliant to get in touch with your freakier side and understand that we don't need fixing and we are important and lovely and move through life at a different pace on a different plane. And we are quite wonderful.
It's an easy-to read, easy-to follow, well sectioned and bite-sized A-Z of the wonders of being ... as you are
SS is funny, tender, real and has created this quite unique piece of writing the likes of which have been hinted at before but never ever been delivered so directly, intelligently, simply and comprehensively.
A must read if your think there's something wrong with your child/friend/parent/co-worker or if you ever feel you are or judge others as 'too much'.
LOVED IT. ~Sarah Sensei

Blew my hair back!

I've been asking for a big billboard-like signs to let me know that I'm on the right track by following my inner compass, travel the road less traveled and why oh why does that elephant with the dirty feet keeps tramping about in my head. This book confirmed that it's okay (and a must) to revel and be one with my quirkiness and freakish nature. It also made me realize I am not alone nor the only one to be told they can be "too much". Thank you Sarah for letting your freak flag fly high for the rest of closet freaks to see and giving us the courage (with a wee bit of salty goading from you-know-who) to fly our unique brand of freakinesss. This is a must read for those of you round pegs who have been trying to get into the "cool kids" square peg party. And the unexpected bonus? I had a HUGE aha regarding the elephant in my brain room. I have a whole new appreciation for the pachydermish kind. Warmly, Tracy

This Book is a Life Changer

I am a huge fan of Sarah's work. The thing is, I read the book thinking it would be helpful in working with my coaching clients who like to live life "outside the fray." Unlike the hipster freaks in my life, I've often considered myself boringly unfreakish, unbrave, and uncool.

However, this unbelievably funny, poignant and insightful book opened my eyes to the fact that we are ALL FREAKS. Learning to identify, embrace, celebrate and broadcast our unique gifts and experiences is how we heal ourselves and heal the world.

I will no longer hide my "muchness."

This book is full extremely powerful, life-changing stuff... all couched in fascinating and highly entertaining stories from Sarah's fabulously interesting life. I bought a copy for myself, and after I read it, ordered several more to share with others.

Fantastic compassion for fellow freaks

As a fellow FREAK, I really was looking forward to reading this book. Sarah's stories were hilarious (especially the 'coffin roaster' story!) as well as heart-felt. My heart and soul were both well fed and satisfied, especially by the leading questions at the end of some of the chapters. They were a great bonus to offer my busy brain something good and healthy to work on. Reading this book helped my to feel more comfortable with my 'gifts' as well as more willing to fully blossom into my full FREAK-ness! Well done, Sarah! Well done! 🙂

Operationalizing the FREAK within

Too be honest, I bought this exceptional book for my therapist knowing that she would love it and be sufficiently effected by reading it to be a better therapist for me. I fell in love with this exceptional book because after reading it, I felt inspired and far less alone. But seriously, "Gilded yurts" or a a "pachydermally inspired worksheet"? The index alone is compelling. It inspires our yurts to be gilded and are worksheets to be far more fun than we had been considering them. Thank you Dr. Seidelmann for the insight and the FREAKcoaching.

This is a rolicking manifesto of fun

I loved Sarah's last book; it was fresh and soulful. However, if the last one was a little tasty morsel, this one is the whole enchilada! This is a soul searching blueprint for how to live your life to its fullest. After years of coloring within the lines, I have become a "change agent" myself. I love the chapter about living with "reckless disregard" for the opinions of others. It is so refreshing to read about Sarah's journey; she makes me feel proud to be a little bent. After finishing the book, I'm going to buy copies for all my freaky friends. Thank you, Sarah and Alice for making me laugh and cry, all in one sitting!

Praise from a Family Therapist!

If you are a parent or a grandparent of a youngster or young adult who alternately delights and drives you a bit crazy, this is an excellent resource. If that child or adult is ADD, this is a both entertaining and absolutely honest book about those particular joys and frustrations. The ABC format is attractive, the author has a great sense of humor, and she does not shirk being vulnerable about her own life and experience as a person with ADD, not discovered until she was a mother of several children. This book offers hope, affirmation, and encouragement to those who feel "out of place" - and to those who know and love them. Most of us who have raised children and watched a generation or two grow up know that the kids who don't feel they fit in are often the most interesting and go on to offer the world the sort of gifts we didn't even know we needed.....Lest we forget, Ms Seidelmann has a wonderful list of these in her book.

Embracing the Freak in Myself and My Autistic Son Because We've Got EPIC Stuff To DO!

This book is AWESOME!! Sarah is smart, funny, authentic and open about her journey and it is one I can so relate to. I'm reading her words going, "ME TOO!!" I thought I was the only one that things like that happened to. Good to know I'm in great company!! I can relate to everything either through my own experiences as well as through the experiences I have with my son who is on the autism spectrum and was definitely born to freak!! I wish all parents who have children who are on their own developmental timelines and journeys could read this so they could learn to appreciate the truly unique children that they have. My hunch is that these children already know that they are born to freak, it's just a matter of getting the adults on board with embracing it rather than trying to "normalize" them.

Born to FREAK has given me insight and encouragement that embracing the ME that makes ME special is the only way to truly rock it out in this lifetime. It has motivated me to push my edges a bit, really connect with and identify what it is that I want more of in my life. It also illustrates quite beautifully how draining it is when there are things in one's life that are holding them back from living the life they were meant to live. Having the perfect life in appearances only is NOT perfect. It's rather empty and quite exhausting. Having a life filled with what fills you with joy and love and connection with all that you find delicious (or knowing how to make the un-delicious more delicious) is true perfection and what that looks like for each of us is different and how awesome is that?

It's been a long time since I've read something that has led me to bookmark so many pages to come back to for inspiration. Sarah and Alice, I thank you so much for helping me to embrace my freak. I look forward to all of the EPIC things that will happen as a result of your writing.

As a life coach/healer, and book lover, I can't say enough about this wondrously perfect primer of witty, wise counsel.

The boundlessly creative, irrepressible Sarah Seidelmann has done it again. She has written yet another BRILLIANT book of witty, gritty, salty and highly entertaining wisdom. From the clever cover and title, to an index like no other, on each and every page there are gems of wise counsel, poignant personal experience, inspired life coaching, salty spirituality, epic entertainment, and goading to greatness. You will laugh and you may even cry as you read, as you begin to see and discover your own irrepressible nature, your own unique gifts, your own perfectly imperfect humanity.

I have this book on my side table, and I can turn to any page at any given moment and be uplifted. I have recommended and loaned this book to several of my coaching clients and it has proven to be a wonderful, delightful transformational tool.

In the words of the amazing Alice the Elephant, "Commit to believing you deserve to experience all the love and connection your heart desires. No earning or repenting or serving time is required." Buy the book, as a gift to YOU, from you...with love (and perhaps a few extra copies for giving).

Validation for those Outside Norm

I'm married to a FREAK (per the book's definition) and found this pretty volume an anthem of acceptance for those who look at life a little (or a lot) differently. I appreciated that it's part personal story & part cheerleading handbook giving the narrator street cred. It couldn't have been easy for her to leave a successful medical career to go create a new life as a surfing, animal totem-seeking, actively engaged mother. If she can change her whole world that way, I can see the positive in what my spouse brings to our life, too.

Genuine fun + life-changing substance = very welcome indeed

I have never ever EVER seen a book create such genuine FUN and combine it with meaty, juicy, deep content. The author makes it look easy. I love the writing, the graphic, the design, the loose easy feel, and how each little nugget of the substance is so interesting and helpful.
Here's the thing: This book will make you remember that you are in love with yourself. And THAT will make you make our world an even lovelier place. That's why I'm buying copies for EVERYBODY.

This will change lives - and the world!

Sarah, I've mostly finished your "Born To Freak" book - hard to tell for sure, because I've been hopping around, which I know delights you to no end! And it's wonderful. My head may wobble right off my head, given all the nodding in agreement I've been doing...

I love the part about choosing the most beautiful doors - because, of course, there are so, so many. And the chapter on Fail. Brilliant. My rubber band has been pulled way back - look out when it lets go... and when it does, I have all your incredible words to help me fly. To say nothing of Alice and all her wisdom.

Thank you. This will help unleash so much good in the world.
