My Tips for These Liminal Times

1. These Are Liminal Times. Are you feeling it too? This morning I was trying to remember all of the things that have helped me in the past during periods of great uncertainty and unknown. Here are a few ideas that I remembered!
–Act on the idea that I am “GETTING READY”- or becoming more prepared (for what I don’t exactly know!)
–Ask: What actions would take me closer to the person that I want to become?
–Prepare my house + creative spaces NOW for the chaos that will come once I get busy doing the “thing” (that thing that I am not sure what it is now!)
–Spend time in nature….its like a friendly womb that can hold me in LOVE with all of my uncertainty.
–Reread “The Way Of Integrity” by Martha Beck to re-awaken me to what needs to be faced in my life (esepcialll y the things I do not want to FACE!)
–Try something new that I’m drawn to but makes no sense (like an online cooking class!)
–Draw a card and reflect on it. Write down what’s in my brain on paper by hand—it always helps .
2. Martin Prechtel, Poet and Author is one of my heroes. He’s challenging and also wonderful to listen to. I highly recommend his book of “The Smell of Rain on Dust” to everyone. His voice is so authentic that it will help you find your own. Here’s his latest note-to invite you to his paid podcast– I wanted you to hear his words.
This is a note to you, good listener, in these troubled times where people stick their heads in buckets of summer vacations to keep from feeling the pelting hailstorm of the vacant tragedy of the absurd politics of cowards and bullies that plays out around us all. ……..encouraging you to not give up tending your freshly hatched armloads of nestlings of a deeper vision, because the hypocrisy running around pissing on human goodness cannot dismantle the whispers in your hearts, and your sparkling birds of unique vision will grow and fly and someday rescue goodness from this gloom.
Don’t turn your back on the everyday ingenious capacity of the Holy in Nature to pump Her brilliant wind of miracles, beauty, and unexpected turns of fate into the vagrant promiscuous flapping mind-bellows of civilization which is always trying to forge some clever shackles of cynicism, dead purity, and depression in order to handcuff you to the bedpost of your assumed destiny.
Let that wind blow through you and break that bed of complacency and free you to jump up and live beyond this dream-crushing lunacy going on around us so we can work harder to keep our little chicks of subversive human goodness alive. Hey, do good, say hello to everybody and every sunrise and nightfall; say hello to people you never talk to including your oppressors. Ask where people are from, what they did, what they love. Laugh with them about delight-filled things. Hold back the violent motion of head-spun dummies, especially your own. Give the self-defeated a warm cardamom bun. Roll down the angry streets in trash cans like felled logs do in their grief-rivers to block the stormtroopers’ unhappy enforcements. Live, make music– loud or quiet, don’t be right, be bright, be good.
And listen to the afflicted, the fools, the assholes and the fine, and especially listen to Season II of Please, Come Sit by My Fire, where together we try to get a deeper start and to keep worthy things alive. Sign up now, or anytime, come on in, because I can’t wait to fill the sorrowing heart with the ancient honey of home. SUBSCRIBE TO PODCAST
3. Are You Procrastinating on Your Creative Work? I interviewed Mason Currey a few years back and he was a DELIGHT. (WATCH now) His book ‘How Creatives Work is an absolute treasure. He wrote that book as a series of blogs posts that he wrote while he was procrastinating on something he was “supposed to be doing”. Tip: Ask yourself – what’s my favorite creative thing or subject when I am procrastiating?
Here are several great + UNUSUAL tips from Mason to get yourself to do “the thing”!
4. Quote I love so much this week!
“Just showing up over and over again is kind of my way that I get over everything, over my laziness, over my apathy, over my despair at what might be going on in the wider world.” ~Austin Kleon
5. Want to Feel Better? Make something every day. Anything! That’s the idea behind the 100 day Creative Soul Retrieval project!
I taught a class at zoom to help everybody design their ideal 100 day project! You can watch it for free here.
One of my biggest tips is to PRACTICE your idea in real life a few times to see if you like it! Does it need a tweak?
I’ll be writing poems this summer!
What project is calling you?
We officially begin our 100 days on June 2nd!
