A Cut-Up Poetry Show!

Thank you for being here! I am grateful for your presence.
I’ve got a busy week ahead with travel, soooo instead of sharing my usual notes with you, I would share something a little different.
For my 30 day project I am doing at the moment I am doing cut-up poetry.
Want to try it out?
1. I like to print our several sheets (10-20?) of some of my favorite pieces of writing: Poetry of Hafiz, Anne Lamott essays, parts of my own writing.
2. Then I start cutting out phrases or individual words that are resonating. Eventually, I begin to arrange them into short poems.
3. I usually need to cut out extra needed words as I go— like YOU, THIS, AND or punctuation (which I sometimes skip!)
4. Glue Stick them down once your poem is finalized .
These are my most recent ones. I’m using an old sketchbook of mine that has loads of images in it already to create the backdrops.
It’s nice because you aren’t starting from absolute ZERO.
There is something in the sources you choose- subjects that you already like- that inspire you!
Or topics like God, owls and the love that lives everywhere.
I hope that somehow seeing these inspires you to start your own audacious project!
(this image above was sketched and painted while visiting Georgia O’Keefe’s marvelous painting at Chicago Art Institue. )
(PLEASE FEEL FREE to tap on any of the above images and save them or share them. )
In the past, I have arranged them on top of old timey papers I have. You could lay them on top of patterned paper you like or watercolors you paint? I love this medium because its unlimited!
Each poem is so imperfect and It’s OK. I could go back and edit one day and maybe I will but, just for today I enjoyed discovering the contents of my HEART.
I hope it inspires you to give it a go! Its a weirdly satisfying way of writing poems and feeling all of the feels that go with that.
I am here to support you! You can learn how to work with me and book here.
I have now opened up some more Tuesdays! .
with much love,
Sarah
